Various automakers have recently disclosed their sales figures for October 2023. Maruti Suzuki, continuing its successful track record, clinched the top position as the best-selling carmaker in the last month. Following closely were Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and other key players.
Given that October coincided with India's festive season, numerous automakers successfully attracted a significant customer base by offering appealing savings and festive deals. Industry sources indicate that the SUV and MPV market segments in India continued to outperform hatchbacks and sedans in terms of sales. The robust performance of the utility vehicles (UVs) market played a pivotal role in keeping many companies ahead of the competition. For a comprehensive overview, here's a breakdown of the top five carmakers that recorded the highest number of vehicle sales in October.
Maruti Suzuki
In October 2023, Maruti Suzuki announced a 19.74% increase in sales of domestic passenger cars. In comparison to 1,40,337 units sold in the same month last year, the automaker delivered 1,68,047 vehicles. The carmaker massively relies on utility cars in India, and it's an effective approach. In comparison to the 30,971 units sold in the previous year, the company delivered 59,147 units in the last month, nearly doubling its sales year-on-year. Maruti Suzuki's Utility Vehicle range includes the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-cross, and XL6.
Hyundai
Hyundai ranked second on the list of the best-selling carmakers in October. The automaker's total sales for the last month were 68,728 units, which is an 18.48% increase in comparison to 58,006 vehicles delivered in the same month last year. In addition, the company's domestic sales in October 2023 increased by almost 15% to 55,128 vehicles from 48,001 units in the same month in 2022. Furthermore, the company shipped 13,600 vehicles abroad in October 2023, representing a 36% increase over the 10,005 units supplied in the same period last year.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors witnessed sales of 48,337 PVs (ICE + Electric) in October 2023 in comparison to 45,217 units during the same month last year, which was a 7% year-over-year increase. Additionally, the automaker sold 5,465 EVs in October, registering a 28% increase from the 4,277 units dispatched in the same month the year before. Over the last few years, the automaker has worked relentlessly to increase its footprint in the expanding Indian SUV category. To accomplish that, it recently revamped the Safari and the Harrier SUVs for the Indian market. The Nexon ICE and EV models were previously released in our market by the manufacturer.
Mahindra
With strong demand for vehicles like the Thar and Scorpio N, the automaker secured fourth place among the top 5 carmakers in October in terms of sales. In the previous month, Mahindra & Mahindra supplied 80,679 vehicles in total, representing a 32% year-over-year rise. For the fourth consecutive month, the automaker achieved the highest sales in the utility vehicle category. It supplied 43,708 units in the domestic market, marking a 36% YoY jump in sales. Including exports, the automaker sold 44,264 vehicles in total.

Kia
Kia recorded its fourth-highest monthly sales in October 2023. It sold 24,351 vehicles in total, exhibiting a 4.41% increase over the 23,323 vehicles delivered in the same period a year ago. With 12,362 sold, the Kia Seltos was the most well-liked and best-selling model for the month. Furthermore, the success was also aided by the sales of the Sonet and Carens, which sold 6,493 and 5,355 units respectively.
