In response to the growing demand for SUVs in our country, automakers are not only expanding and updating their product line-ups but also introducing brand-new models for our home market. Interestingly, the auto industry registered its highest-ever monthly sales volume of 3,60,897 units last month – a record month for domestic wholesale dispatches, with a significant contribution of 52 per cent from the SUV segment. Tata Motor's popular Nexon model continued its successful streak in September, selling more units than any other SUV in India. The Hyundai Creta, Tata Punch, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza were some of the models that followed the Nexon in terms of sales volume. Here is a full breakdown of the top 5 SUVs in terms of sales in September 2023.
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon continues to lead SUV sales in India, owing, perhaps, to its diverse powertrain options. It recently underwent a significant design and feature overhaul, giving the SUV a more upscale and sporty appearance. The model dominated the SUV market last month, with a total of 15,325 units sold. Notably, this is a 6% increase over the 14,518 units sold in the same month in 2022. Apart from several added features and a new exterior layout, the all-new Nexon, which went on sale last month, also comes with a new dual-clutch gearbox.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
A total of 15,001 units of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza were sold last month compared to 15,445 in September 2022, making it the segment's second best-selling SUV. The year-over-year sales did, however, fall by 3 per cent. There are four different variants of the model available in India – LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi Plus. It comes with a single engine and two gearbox choices. In contrast to the Nexon, Brezza also gas a CNG variant, with a five-speed manual transmission.
Tata Punch
The Tata Punch, the homegrown automaker's entry-level SUV for India and the most affordable vehicle to receive a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, sits at the third spot on the list. In September 2023, 13,045 units of the model were sold, registering a 6% year-over-year increase from the 12,251 units in the same month last year. On the powertrain front, it is propelled by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit, coupled to a manual or AMT transmission. Moreover, in comparison to a standard CNG tank, the manufacturer's new twin-cylinder CNG system offers additional boot space.
Hyundai Creta
The Creta SUV from Hyundai with sales of 12,717 units in September 2023, was the fourth-best-selling model in the SUV category. The carmaker sold 12,866 Creta units in September 2022, representing a 1% YoY decline in sales. The SUV is soon going to receive significant updates, as a facelifted model is currently in the works. The upcoming all-new Creta will likely have an improved powertrain, a new interior layout, a revamped exterior, and additional features such as ADAS. As for the current powertrain options, the car is offered with petrol and diesel units, mated to manual and automatic transmission options.
Hyundai Venue
Ranking fifth on the list is another popular Hyundai SUV – the Venue. Compared to 11,033 units sold during the same period in 2022, the manufacturer sold 12,204 units of the car in September 2023, registering an increase of 11%. After a recent overhaul, the Venue has now become the first and only SUV in its segment to be equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The ADAS variant carries an ex-showroom price tag of Rs 12.44 lakh. It rivals the likes of the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
