SUVs continued to maintain sales dominance in the month of November, as indicated by the recently released sales figures for the month. While the Tata Nexon SUV topped the list, its sibling, the Punch, took the second spot, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, the Scorpio, and the Creta in the third, fourth, and fifth place respectively. Interestingly, it is the first time that the Scorpio SUV has managed to outperform Hyundai's immensely famous offering, the Creta in terms of sales. So, let's look at how these models fared in the previous month in detail.
Tata Nexon
Despite a 6% drop in year-on-year sales in November, the Tata Nexon SUV succeeded in being the most-sold SUV last month. Tata sold 14,916 units of the Nexon in November 2023 as opposed to 15,871 units in the same period last year. Mechanically, the Nexon has two engine options: a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel unit. The turbo-petrol motor produces 118bhp and a peak torque of 170Nm, while the diesel motor offers a power output of about 113bhp and a peak torque of 260Nm. In India, the SUV retails between Rs 8.10 lakh and Rs 13 lakh. Both figures are ex-showroom.
Tata Punch
The Punch, a compact SUV by Tata Motors, took the second spot in the sales chart last month. The automaker sold 14,383 units of the Punch, representing a solid 19% YoY increase over the 12,131 units sold in the same month last year. Tata Motors hasn't made an official announcement, but the electrified Punch is expected to arrive in India shortly. The current Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which produces 87bhp and is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. This engine only develops 72.4bhp when operating on compressed natural gas (CNG). The ex-showroom price of the Punch SUV in Delhi is between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10.10 lakh.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
With monthly sales of 13,393 units, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza occupied third place on the list, registering an 18% increase in year-over-year sales in comparison to 11,324 units sold in November last year. The Brezza has a starting price of Rs 8.29 lakh (ex-showroom) in the country and comes in four core variants: LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+. It also has a boot space of 328 litres. The SUV's 1.5-litre petrol engine produces 102bhp and 137Nm and is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is also available with a CNG option.
Mahindra Scorpio
The Mahindra Scorpio, which is offered in both the Scorpio-N and Classic models, sits at the fourth place in the list. In November 2023, the sales of the Scorpio increased by almost 90% YoY. The carmaker delivered 12,185 Scorpios last month as opposed to 6,455 in the same month last year. For the first time since its release, the Scorpio-N SUV surpassed well-known vehicles like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in terms of sales. The starting price of the base Mahindra Scorpio model in India is Rs 13.25 lakh (ex-showroom).
