Top 5 Best-selling Sedans in July 2024: Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze and More

With 11,647 units sold in the domestic market in July 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire topped the sedan sales charts. However, this represents a 13 per cent decrease from the 13,395 unit sales in the same month the previous year.

In July 2024, the sedan market in India suffered a steep decline with overall sales falling by 22.12 per cent year-on-year (YoY). Overall sedan sales for the month were 25,891 units, compared to 33,244 units sold in July 2023, representing a 7,353-unit decline. Some models in the market continued to dominate despite the slump, while others saw sharp declines in sales.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

With 11,647 units sold in the domestic market in July 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire topped the sedan sales charts. However, this represents a 13 per cent decrease from the 13,395 unit sales in the same month the previous year. It has four variants: ZXi, ZXi+, VXi, and LXi, with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs 6.57 lakh to Rs 9.39 lakh. The car is powered by a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine producing 89bhp and 113Nm, which is mated to a five-speed manual or five-speed AMT gearbox. When powered by CNG, the same mill generates 76bhp of maximum power and 98.5Nm of peak torque with only a five-speed MT gearbox. Although the manufacturer has not yet released the launch specifics, we expect the Dzire facelift to be on sale in India this year.

Hyundai Aura

Closely trailing its primary rival, the Dzire, in sales, the Hyundai Aura continued to hold its rank as the country's second-best-selling sedan. In July 2024, sales of Hyundai Aura units reached 4,757 units, a 5 per cent rise over the 4,514 units sold in the same month the year before. With 243 more units sold than the previous year, the Hyundai model was able to capture an 18.37 per cent market share. Carrying a starting price tag of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, this subcompact sedan comes in six monochromatic exterior paint jobs. On the mechanical front, the Aura's 1.2-litre engine produces 82bhp of maximum power and 114Nm of peak torque when mated to an AMT or five-speed manual gearbox. On compressed natural gas (CNG), however, the vehicle only produces 68bhp and 95 Nm with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Honda Amaze

The Honda Amaze, on the other hand, came in third place with 2,327 units sold last month. This represents a notable 31 per cent year-over-year decline from 3,386 units in July 2023. The market share of Amaze stood at 8.99 per cent. The sub-4m sedan costs between Rs 7.16 lakh and Rs 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), and has a boot capacity of 420 litres. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine which belts out 88bhp of peak power and 110Nm of maximum torque, and comes with either a CVT or a five-speed manual gearbox. According to several industry reports, the next-generation Honda Amaze is currently under development, with a potential launch scheduled for this festive season. 

Volkswagen Virtus

The Volkswagen Virtus secured fourth place with 1,766 units sold last month, a 2 per cent surge over the 1,737 units sold during the same period last year. Owing to impressive sales figures, it was the most popular vehicle in the midsize sedan market last month. Meanwhile, its sibling, the Skoda Slavia finished eighth in overall sedan sales. Coming to the mechanicals, two petrol engine options are available for the Virtus in our market: a 1.5-litre unit with 148bhp and a 1.0-litre mill with 113.4bhp. In India, the ex-showroom starting price of the Volkswagen sedan is Rs 11.48 lakh.

Tata Tigor

Tata's Tigor, including the EV version, experienced one of the most drastic sales declines in the market. A total of 1,495 units of the model were sold in July 2024, down 44.30 per cent year on year from 2,684 in July 2023. Despite the dip, the Tigor still holds a 5.77 per cent market share. Under the hood, the Tata Tigor is equipped with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, petrol engine, cranking out 85bhp and 113Nm of torque. In CNG mode, the engine generates 72bhp and 95Nm of torque. Furthermore, the transmission options for the CNG-powered Tigor comprise a five-speed manual and a five-speed automatic unit.
