In India, SUVs are becoming more and more popular every day. This market accounted for 55% of the total sales of cars in the nation last month. The month of August presented difficulties for the top automakers: Tata Motors saw a 3% reduction year-on-year (YoY), while Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai saw an 8% decline. However, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai saw a month-on-month (MoM) increase of 4.1% and 1%, respectively, while Tata Motors witnessed a 1.3% decline. In addition to six SUVs, there were three hatchbacks and one MPV, among the top ten best-selling models. Six of the ten models were from Maruti Suzuki India's stable, two by Tata Motors, and one by Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India, each. Maruti Suzuki's Brezza and Ertiga claimed the top slots in August, with the Creta coming in third. Here is the complete list of the top 5 best-selling cars for August 2024.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza

With 19,190 units delivered in August 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the top-performing vehicle in the sales chart. It consistently outsells rivals in terms of sales, including the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The Brezza experienced a sales growth of about 32% in comparison to August last year, and it also saw a month-on-month (MoM) sales growth of roughly 31%. The price of the SUV ranges between Rs 8.34 lakh and Rs 14.14 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom figures.

A 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 101.5bhp and 137Nm powers the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. A factory-fitted CNG kit is another option that lowers power output to 86.7bhp and 121.5Nm. The only available gearbox choice for CNG-equipped models is a five-speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, one of the most well-liked models among fleet operators, comes in second place. Despite having just one engine option, the MPV's spacious cabin and seven-seating arrangement make it a popular choice. Maruti Suzuki sold 18,580 car units last month, a remarkable YoY 51% boost and an 18% MoM increase in sales. The ex-showroom price of the Ertiga starts at Rs 8.69 lakh and goes up to Rs 13.03 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Rear

The Ertiga houses a 1.5-litre petrol unit, which develops 101.5bhp and 137Nm. A factory-installed CNG kit is also an option. A six-speed torque converter automatic or a five-speed manual are available gearbox options. The only manual gearbox available for the CNG-equipped models is a five-speed one.

Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta is a must-have on the list of the best-selling models for the month, and its appeal is only expected to grow with the 2024 redesign. Hyundai also introduced the Knight Edition of the compact SUV, with pricing beginning at Rs 14.51 lakh (ex-showroom). This Special Edition includes an all-black exterior and interior. The sales of the Creta have increased by 21% over the previous year, although MoM sales have decreased by about 3%. Coming to the price details, the standard Creta costs between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 20.30 lakh, while the N-Line model ranges between Rs 16.82 lakh and Rs 20.45 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.

Hyundai Creta

When it comes to mechanicals, the Creta has three engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, and a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit. The first two units, producing 250Nm/114bhp and 144Nm/113bhp, respectively, were modified to meet the more stringent BS6 Phase II emission standards. The new turbo GDi petrol engine, on the other hand, puts out 158bhp of maximum power and 253Nm of peak torque. Moreover, four transmission options are available: a six-speed manual, an IVT, a standard seven-speed DCT, and a six-speed automatic.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

In August 2024, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R fell one spot in sales compared to July 2024. The carmaker saw an increase in the model's sales from 16,191 units in July to 16,450 units last month. Additionally, sales surged by 6% as compared to August last year. One of the main reasons it is consistently one of the best sellers each month is because purchasers like its CNG-equipped models.
