With GST coming in to effect from July 1, most budget cars are set to become dearer. May 2017 remained a positive month for the leading manufacturers as customers prefer to buy cars before the price hike.
The top 10 sellers of May 2017 are out. The list, unsurprisingly, is dominated by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, which are the top two selling brands in India since quite a while now. Seven cars out of the top ten sold are Marutis.
Model | Sales (May’17) |
Maruti Suzuki Alto | 23,618 |
Maruti Suzuki Swift | 16,532 |
Maruti Suzuki WagonR | 15,471 |
Maruti Suzuki Baleno | 14,629 |
Hyundai Grand i10 | 12,984 |
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza | 12,375 |
Hyundai Elite i20 | 10,667 |
Maruti Suzuki DZire | 9,413 |
Hyundai Creta | 8,377 |
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 7,121 |
The Maruti Alto had regained its sales crown in the month gone by, displacing the Swift to the second place. The WagonR comfortably hovers around the 15,000-16,000 units per month mark.
Maruti’s premium hatchback, the Baleno, held on to its segment leader position by displacing its chief rival, the Hyundai i20, by almost 6,000 units. Similarly, the Vitara Brezza and the Ertiga, too dominate their respective segments.
Hyundai’s Creta, despite its inflated price tag, still managed to be a favorite among the buyers. The Creta is the most expensive car in this list and still managed to sell 8,377 units in May. Another Hyundai, the recently facelifted Grand i10, kept its top position firm in its segment by selling 12,984 units, thus easily outclassing the Maruti Ignis.
The third generation Maruti Suzuki DZire had a fantastic debut in May. At 9,413 units, it sold more than any other compact sedan despite being launched in the middle of the month, and it can be safely speculated that the sales will surge in future as the new model establishes itself.
