BMW went past Mercedes and Volkswagen to claim the World Green Car award for its i8. BMW also claimed the award last year with its i3.
In a ceremony otherwise dominated by Mercedes-Benz, an another German carmaker claimed one of the five trophies. BMW’s i8 was chosen to be the World Green Car 2015 over the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-In Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf GTE. With this win BMW has taken its tally in the Green category to three since 2010. BMW’s BlueMotion technology helped it won the award in 2010 and in 2014 it was the i3 that earned BMW the title.
On this success, Ulrich Kranz, Director BMW i Model Line said, “We feel extremely honoured, receiving this prestigious World Green Car award for the BMW i8. Together with the 2014 World Green Car Award for the BMW i3 it just confirms the rightfulness of our purpose-built strategy when it comes to electric cars. BornElectric instead of conversion is the way to go.”
Due to some of the extreme complexities involved in these cars, five experts are appointed every year to look at things in these cars and present the jurors with information that is easy for them to comprehend. 75 jurors then vote on these recommendations to find a common winner.
Commenting on the BMW i8’s win, the experts commented, “The BMW i8 gasoline hybrid looks so cool, it should be the icon for all “Green” cars..So it inspires Green Passion, which on paper looks like 155 mph on the i8's three cylinder turbo gasoline engine, four-wheel-drive and four seats. The i8 adds so much enjoyment to a sensible lifestyle that it needs to be recognized as a great Green Car.”
