It's been over 7 months since Maserati revealed its most powerful car with a 724bhp, 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno engine. Christened the MCXtrema, the track-only supercar is based on the Maserati MC20 but comes with a more aggressive aerodynamic design, incorporating elements like trident-shaped air vents and a big adjustable spoiler. Maserati will begin the deliveries of the Maserati MCXtrema late this summer. However, prior to this, Maserati released a set of images showing the MCXtrema undergoing a series of tests.
The Maserati MCXtrema, driven by chief test driver Andrea Bertolini, first hit the track at the Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari (Parma) in February 2024. According to Maserati, the track offered an 'ideal setting to unleash the full power' of a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine. For the unversed, the Maserati Nettuno engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox that transmits power to the rear wheels through a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Though not much is known about the testing process, Maserati has already conducted virtual tests, involving 200 hours in the Maserati dynamic simulator and 1000 hours of virtual analysis. This is in addition to the previous four years of development on the MC20. "A wonderful creation made to devour the asphalt and trip through the curves, a true gem of mechanics and aerodynamics, perfect for balance and handling. For months, we worked together with a team of highly skilled and passionate people, waiting for the moment we could bring the finished object to its natural habitat, after putting it through its virtual paces in sophisticated simulations," said Bertolini.
Revealed at The Quail during the 2023 Monterey Car Week, the Maserati MCXtrema is built around an upgraded chassis, made of ultra-light carbon fibre. Thanks to new bodywork and revised chassis, the supercar tips the scales at 1300 kilograms. Other bits are four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, paddle shifters, four-way adjustable racing dampers, and Brembo brakes.
Maserati MCXtrema: Interior
Bertolini said, "The interior has been designed around the driver; we developed a cockpit as a cross between a fighter and a Formula 1 single-seater". A yoke-style steering wheel with an integrated 5.0-inch display makes its way into the MCXtrema, along with a single-hand seat. Safety-wise, the car offers a six-point racing harness and a roll cage.
Maserati MCXtrema: Customisation Program
Maserati's MCXlusiva customisation programme allows customers to enter the Maserati Centro Stile atelier and choose from Tech Beast, Corse, and Speed Beast variants. Even the wheel rims are offered in a choice of Matte Black and Grigio Corsa Bright colours, while the seats are available in Black, Blue, and Ice versions.
Upcoming Maserati Launches in India
Maserati will carry out the market launch of the Grecale SUV in 2024 in India. While the pricing details are yet to be revealed, we expect it to range between Rs 90 lakh and Rs 1.20 crore (ex-showroom). At this price, it will rival other SUVs such as the Porsche Macan (Rs 88 lakh to Rs 1.53 crore) and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe (Rs 77 lakh to Rs 1.09 crore). In Maserati's lineup, this entry-level Grecale will slot under the Levante and will be offered in 3 variants — GT, Modena, and Trofeo, which seems quite sporty. Moreover, you will also see Maserati bring the GranTurismo Folgore and the Grecale Folgore this year.
