The new Tata Zica is new in every way and appears to be a contemporary offering that has the potential to worry its rivals. Read on to know all about the new Tata Zica

Tata Motors has officially revealed details about its new Zica hatchback which is just around the corner on the launch calendar.

The Zica may very well be based on a modified version of the platform that underpinned the original Indica, but there is a lot that is new about this car. It’s a good thing that it shares its platform with its predecessor considering how generous the Indica is in terms of interior space. But from thereon it’s a completely new story.

When it comes to dimensions, the Zica measures in at 3,746mm in length, 1,647mm in width, 1,535mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,400mm. Ground clearance is measured at 170mm.  The car is shod with 175/65 R14 rubber.

As we have discussed in our story about the reveal of images of the Zica’s exterior, the car is a thoroughly modern looking one that will fit in very well with its competition, if not stand out of the crowd. Clear and sharp design lines with a well rounded contemporary profile, the new Tata Zica is a good looking car indeed and Tata has to be credited for that.

Tata Zica, interior

Inside, it’s a completely new cabin for a Tata as well with its dual tone layout which uses a lighter gray shade in the lower section of the dashboard and door pads. The steering wheel uses silver finish on the spokes and houses audio controls for the Bluetooth compatible Harman dual-DIN stereo which comes with eight speakers, a Juke-Car app and Smartphone enabled navigation app.

The cabin looks like a nice place to be in with what appears to be good quality plastics for a car in its segment. The centre console has a piano black finish, the centre air vents get chrome detailing while the side ones get customizable covers, the interior door handles are finished in chrome as well. There are buttons for rear defogger, front and rear fog lamps and Eco mode below the stereo. The HVAC controls consist of rotary switchgear.

In terms of equipment, the top end XZ trim will come loaded with a driver information display, clock, air conditioning and heating, power windows all around, electrically adjustable ORVMs, front power socket, foldable key, tilt adjustable steering wheel, front and rear head rests, rear defogger and wash wipe.

Tata Zica boot

The black colour fabric seats of the Zica appear to be well designed and shaped for comfort, although cabin space seems to be just about adequate in the pictures we have of the car at the moment. The Zica offers a boot space of 240 litres.

Under the hood is where there are an equally new set of engines as the car. There is a 1,199cc, three cylinder aluminum Revotron petrol engine with dual overhead camshafts four valves per cylinder. The engine is capable of developing 83bhp of max power @ 6,000 rpm and 114Nm of peak torque @ 3,500 rpm. Kerb weight of the petrol Zica is 1,012kg.

The diesel engine in question is also a new three cylinder 1,047cc unit. Referred to as a Revotorq unit, this new common rail diesel engine has a cast iron block and aluminum head construction with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The engine has a rated power output of 69bhp @ 4,000 rpm and 140Nm of peak torque between 1,800 rpm and 3,000 rpm. The diesel model weighs 1080kg in kerb weight.

Both the petrol and diesel models get a 35 litre fuel tank. Expect the petrol and diesel Zica to boast high fuel efficiency figures.
