The new Tata Safari and the Harrier have scored a 5-star safety rating and become the first Indian cars with the highest GNCAP score for adult and child occupant safety. The timing of these crash crash tests was significant as these were among the last few cars to be tested under the 'Safer Cars For India' programme before the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) came into effect on October 1. For those not aware, GNCAP's crash test protocols evaluate frontal and side impact protection and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for all models, along with pedestrian and side-impact pole protection assessments.
Tata Safari, Harrier: Adult Occupant Crash Test Results
In Adult Occupant Protection, the facelifted versions received 33.05 points out of 34 points. The updated SUVs offered 'good' protection to the driver's and passenger's head and neck in the frontal impact test, while the chest (both driver and passenger) was adequately protected.

As for the side impact test, the latest Harrier and Safari offered 'good' protection to the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Also, the footwell area and bodyshell were 'stable' and could withstand additional loads. Meanwhile, in the side pole impact test, the SUVs provided 'adequate' protection to the abdomen, 'good' protection to the head and pelvis, and 'marginal' protection to the chest.
Tata Safari, Harrier: Child Occupant Crash Test Results
As far as child occupant protection goes, the refreshed models secured 45 out of 49 points. This includes a child restraint system (CRS) installation score of 12 points and a dynamic score of 24 points. The models tested were equipped with dual front airbags, side head curtain airbags, side chest airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, three-point seatbelts with pre-tensioners, seatbelt reminders, ESC, as well as a passenger airbag disabling switch. Moreover, the Safari and Harrier also met the requirements of UN127 and GTR9 for pedestrian protection as standard.

In terms of safety, the newly-launched SUVs offer a host of features, such as up to seven airbags, one of which will be for the driver's knees. In addition, the Harrier and Safari also come equipped with level-2 ADAS technology with 17 driver assistance capabilities. Among other safety features are ABS with EBD, ESP, a tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control, driver attention alert, hill descent control, emergency call, and breakdown alert.
The Safari and Harrier are based on the same vehicle platform, however, the Safari can seat up to seven people, whereas the Harrier offers a maximum capacity of five. Under the hood, the Harrier and the Safari come powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, yielding 168bhp/350Nm with a 6-speed manual or automated transmission. The new Harrier has a manual fuel efficiency of 16.80 km/l and an automated fuel efficiency of 14.60 km/l. The asserted fuel efficiency for the revamped Safari is 16.30km/l for the manual and 14.50km/l for the automatic.

The price of the Tata Harrier facelift starts at Rs 15.49 lakh and goes up to Rs 24.49 lakh, while the 2023 Safari retails between Rs 16.19 lakh and Rs 25.49 lakh. Prices are ex-showroom, India.
