The youngest member of Tata’s SUV family, the Punch has been revealed. The new micro SUV will be sold with one engine and two gearbox options.
Tata Punch is the brand’s new addition to their SUV lineup. The Punch will be the most affordable Tata SUV that will be positioned below the Nexon. While we expect an official price announcement to be held sometime this month, so far the manufacturer has revealed the new micro SUV and started accepting bookings for the same.
The Punch can be booked at Tata’s virtual showroom or at any authorised dealership across the nation for a token of Rs 21,000.
The Tata Punch is based on the ALFA platform which also underpins the Tata Altroz. The engine on offer is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor – which is also available in the Tata Altroz. The state of tune of this naturally aspirated motor is identical to the one in the Altroz. Tata Motors says they have worked upon the engine to improve the bottom end performance.
The power output of the Punch is 84.8bhp at 6,000rpm and 113Nm of peak torque at 3,300rpm. There are two gearbox options – a five-speed manual and a five-speed AMT. Tata claims that the Punch can sprint to 100km/hr from a standstill in 16.5 seconds.
Coming to the Punch’s ‘SUV’ credentials. The new micro SUV gets a 370mm of water wadding limit. The approach and departure angles are 20.3 degrees and 37.6 degrees respectively. The breakover (ramp over) angle is marked at 22.2 degrees. The Punch has an unladen ground clearance of 187mm. The higher variants will be equipped with 16-inch alloy-wheel size and the lower variants will be offered with 15-inch wheel size.
Tata Motors will offer a spare wheel with the Punch; however, the brand will also offer a tyre repair kit across variants.
The Tata Punch will be offered in four variants. Some of the creature comforts on offer are a six-way adjustable driver seat, push-button start, projector headlamps, part digital and part analogue (7-inch) instrument cluster. The infotainment on offer is a 7-inch touch-operated unit sourced from Harman. The Punch will also feature Tata’s connected tech, IRA which will give access to a few features via the smartphone application.
The price of the new Tata Punch is expected to start from Rs 5 lakh (ex-showroom). The Punch will mainly rival the Maruti Suzuki Ignis in the Indian market.
