Tata to do away with the 'Zica' badge, fearing its association with the rapidly spreading 'Zika' virus!
Tata Motors has confirmed that it will rename its forthcoming Zica hatchback in view of the rapidly spreading ‘Zika’ virus. The announcement comes only a day prior to the start of the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, where the new hatchback is scheduled to make its first ever public appearance. The manufacturer is still reviewing the new name for the hatchback, but will continue to showcase the hatchback with Zica badges at the auto expo.
The Tata Zica was revealed in November 2015. The name was apparently derived from the words – zippy and car. However, starting January 2016, the dreadful ‘Zika’ virus started hitting the headlines, making it inevitable for people to relate the virus to the soon-to-be-launched hatchback. While most of us did not expect Tata Motors to come out and announce the name change, the company has taken a quick measure before the virus (and its unfortunate relation with the hatchback) goes even more viral.
Name conundrum aside, the Tata Zica looks immensely promising as a product. Built on a modified platform as of the Indica, the Zica is a thoroughly modern and contemporary looking hatchback. The cabin of the hatchback is well appointed, too, and comes with some class-leading features and equipment. Powertrain options on the new hatchback include a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol and a 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engine. The petrol unit develops 83bhp of max power @ 6,000 rpm and 114Nm of peak torque @ 3,500 rpm, whereas, the diesel has a rated power output of 69bhp @ 4,000 rpm and 140Nm of peak torque between 1,800 rpm and 3,000 rpm.
The Tata Zica will compete against the likes of the Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Chevrolet Beat etc. Its prices as a result will hover around Rs 3.5 lakhs to Rs 4.5 lakhs (ex-showroom).
