Tata’s new micro SUV has been spotted once again. The test mule looks production-ready and the launch is most likely scheduled for next month. Expect a price tag between Rs 5-7 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Motors recently launched the 2021 Tiago NRG, which is essentially a Tiago hatchback based crossover. The company has been working on a sub-4-metre micro SUV that will be positioned below the Tata Nexon making it the most affordable SUV in the car maker's portfolio. The new micro SUV will be based on the HBX concept that Tata showcased at the Auto Expo 2020.
The new micro SUV will be underpinned by an iteration of the Alfa platform, which is also the base for the Tata Altroz. The powertrain is likely to be borrowed from the Tiago. A 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is likely to be offered with the production model. A five-speed manual transmission will be a standard offering, whereas, an AMT gearbox could be offered as an option.

Expect features such as a touch-operated infotainment system, part digital and part analogue instrument cluster. The stereo system is likely to be sourced from Harman. Projector headlamps with LED DRLs, automatic-climate control could make their way in the feature list as well. The cabin is likely to see highlights that match the exterior colour – a styling trait that we have already seen on the Tiago NRG.
The production model is likely to be dubbed the Hornbill, and the new micro SUV will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The Ignis is priced between Rs 4.95 lakh and Rs 7.50 lakh (ex-showroom). The production model of the Tata HBX is expected in the same pricing bracket and the launch is likely to be scheduled for this festive season.
