The Tata Harrier Facelift has brought along a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine mated to either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox, with prices starting at Rs 15.49 lakh and going all the way up to Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Harrier is part of the hotly-contested mid-size SUV segment, and although it does not have a direct rival, the Tata Harrier goes up against the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, and the Hyundai Creta. This time, we put it to a comparison with the Kia Seltos to see how they stack up against each other in terms of powertrains, specifications, variant-wise prices, and more. The common factor is that they both offer BS6 Phase II-compliant powertrains with an automatic transmission option. So, here's how these models fare against each other, on paper.

Tata Harrier vs Kia Seltos: Engine, Output

While the Indian carmaker has confirmed the 1.5-litre TGDi petrol engine (168bhp/280Nm) for the Harrier at a later date, the SUV as of now continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel motor with 168bhp and 350Nm. The diesel unit is mated to a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox. The latter is only available from the Adventure Plus variant onwards.

On offer are also three driving modes – Eco, City, and Sport, along with an updated suspension setup and three terrain response modes – Normal, Rough, and Wet. The Kia Seltos, on the other hand, gets 3 engine options: a 1.5-litre petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, as well as a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. The naturally aspirated petrol unit churns out 113bhp/144Nm and gets a 6-speed or a CVT, while the diesel engine generates 114.4bhp/250Nm and is offered with a 6-speed iMT or a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, these numbers fall short of what the Harrier's diesel unit delivers.

That said, the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine on the Kia Seltos produces 158bhp and 253Nm of torque, both comparable to those of the Tata Harrier. This mill is connected to either a seven-speed DCT or a six-speed iMT.

Tata Harrier vs Kia Seltos: Fuel Efficiency

The new Smartstream 1.5-litre TGDi petrol powertrain of the Seltos yields an ARAI-certified 17.7km/l with iMT and 17.9km/l with DCT automatic gears. Kia says that the 1.5 petrol-MT returns a fuel economy of 17km/l, while the CVT gets 17.7km/l. This makes the Seltos more fuel-efficient than the Harrier, which returns 14.60km/l and 16.80km/l with the automatic and manual gearbox, respectively.

Tata Harrier vs Kia Seltos: Variants, Colours

Similar to the Nexon facelift, Tata Motors has done away with the usual nomenclature and adopted new trim names for the Harrier. Therefore, the 2023 Tata Harrier is offered in four trim levels – Smart, Pure, Adventure, and Fearless. Plus, the SUV gets optional packages denoted by ‘+’ or ‘A’ suffixes. Launched in July, the Kia Seltos comes in 7 variants spread across 3 core trims. These variants are HTE, HTK, HTK Plus, HTX, HTX Plus, GTX Plus, and X Line.

The trims of the new Harrier come with their own special exterior and interior colour options. In terms of dimensions, the Tata Harrier facelift measures 4,605mm in length, 1,922mm in width, and 1,718mm in height. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,741mm. Design-wise, the Tata Harrier is more modern and sharper than before. The rear end, meanwhile, sports a revamped bumper and slimmer tail lights. Other elements include newly designed 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels.

In comparison, the Seltos facelift is 4,365mm long, 1,800mm wide, and 1,645mm tall, and its wheelbase stands at 2,610mm. These numbers clearly indicate that the Harrier is the bigger SUV of the two.
