It was about time Tata offered the Altroz with an automatic transmission.
Tata Motors – via a tweet – has confirmed that the Altroz hatchback will be updated with an automatic transmission this year. While there is no specific timeline provided, Tata Motors is likely to launch the updated Altroz in the first half of this year. The Tata Altroz was introduced in 2019, and while it did get a diesel powertrain back then, the B+ segment hatchback missed out on the convenience of an automatic.
Now, the 2022 Altroz will feature an AMT in both the petrol, as well as, diesel variants, which will mostly be borrowed from the Tata Nexon. Other than the upgraded transmission, the 2022 Altroz could spawn with a minor facelift. The fascia will mostly sport a few tweaks in terms of styling. The cabin and the features list will most probably be unchanged.
The Altroz currently gets three engine options which consist of 1.2-litre N.A-petrol, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. To keep the cost in check, Tata may offer the AMT with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel. The 1.2-litre N.A-petrol will be continued in the lower variants with a manual gearbox.
The addition of an AMT will make Altroz’s case slightly stronger against the automatic variants of the Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and the upcoming 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The new gearbox option is likely to hike the price of the hatchback by Rs, 40,000 approximately.
