It should come as no surprise that the Maruti Suzuki Swift is a hugely popular car in India. The extraordinary number of Swift/DZire models plying on the country’s roads is a further proof to that fact. However, it’s not only India where the Swift is raking massive sale numbers. All around the world, the Suzuki Swift has been selling like hot cakes since its launch in 2004. And that’s why it has now reached a cumulative worldwide sales figure of 5 million units!
Currently produced in seven countries including India, Japan, Hungary, China, Pakistan, Malaysia and Vietnam, the Swift is sold in more than 140 nations worldwide. India is of course the major market for the Swift range of models with as much as 54 per cent of its total sales coming from the country. After the launch of the Swift hatchback in 2005 and Swift DZire in 2008, Maruti Suzuki has sold over 2.7 million units of these models so far. The Swift models also account for nearly 30 per cent, or approximately 4.30 lakh units, of annual sales for Maruti Suzuki in India.
After India, the Swift sells the most in Europe with 17 per cent of the total 5 million units dispatched to customers in the region. Japan is the third-biggest market for the Swift with 10 per cent of the total sales coming in from its home country.
Reportedly, Suzuki is currently developing the third-generation Swift which is likely to go on sale sometime around 2017. The new model is expected to go on sale in India first.
