The Skoda Rapid sees the end of the line. The position will be fulfilled by the upcoming Skoda Slavia sedan. This news also puts an end to the rumour that the Rapid and the Slavia will be on sale alongside each other.
Zac Hollis, Director - Sales and Marketing, Skoda Auto India, recently confirmed that Skoda has pulled the plug on the Rapid sedan. The last batch of Skoda Rapid rolled out as a matte edition.
Skoda sold over one lakh units of the Rapid in its life cycle. This year, the Skoda Rapid gathered around 10 per cent of the market share in its respective segment. Skoda Rapid was launched in India back when the segment saw the presence of the Ford Fiesta, Fiat Linea and Maruti Suzuki SX4. While these cars have been discontinued, other sedans from the same segment such as the Verna and the City have evolved into new age propositions. The SX4 made way for the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as well.
Now, Skoda India will bring its newest product, the Salvia very soon. The global debut of the new sedan will be held on November 18. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that powers the outgoing Rapid will live in the upcoming Slavia, however, with a more aggressive state of tune.
There will also be a higher variant in the Slavia lineup that will feature a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor, the same unit that powers the higher variants of the Skoda Kushaq. In terms of dimension, the Skoda Slava will be a larger car than the outgoing Skoda Rapid.
