The Automotive Research Association of India, or ARAI, has certified Skoda Auto India's 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Certification has been given to both the manual and automatic transmissions. The Czech carmaker is among the first few OEMs to obtain official E20 certification. For the uninitiated, this unit powers the Kushaq SUV, the Slavia sedan, and Volkswagen's Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. The engine can produce 114bhp of maximum power and 178Nm of peak torque. A six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox can be paired with this mill. First seen on the newly released Kushaq Onyx AT, the new E20-compliant unit will soon be available on all 1.0-litre TSI Skoda models to come off the Chakan assembly line.

What Skoda Has to Say
E20 petrol is essentially a combination of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Commenting on the occasion, Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India said, 'Along with making cars that lead in driving dynamics and safety, efficiency, and sustainability have also been at the centre of our product and production practices. TSI technology has been time-tested and proven for efficiency and emissions while being effectively powered. We have evolved and adapted this technology to various updates in standards and policies across the globe. The 1.0 TSI especially, with its 3-cylinder turbo configuration tuned for power and efficiency is a versatile powertrain, and the E20 certification is a testament to this. We are confident of a similar outcome when the 1.5 TSI is tested, later this year.'
To make it compatible with E20 regulations, the brand is also testing its 1.5-litre TSI engine; certification is anticipated in Q4 2024. The unit puts out 250Nm of peak torque and 148bhp of maximum power. It is mated to either a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. The higher-spec Skoda Kushaq and Slavia variants are equipped with this engine.
