1. Volkswagen Taigun & Skoda Kushaq

The Volkswagen Taigun has been making headlines in the compact SUV segment, especially in terms of safety, as Global NCAP has given it a 5-star rating with a score point of 29.64/34 for adults and 42/49 for child occupant safety in the crash tests. It comes with up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a rear-view camera. The compact SUV is available with two turbocharged petrol engines – a 1.0-litre unit, which delivers 113bhp and 178Nm, and a 1.5-litre unit, which produces 148bhp and 25Nm. Both engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard, along with an automatic transmission. It is available in two variants –Dynamic Line and Performance Line – and costs between ₹11.56 lakh (ex-showroom) and ₹18.71 (ex-showroom).

The Skoda Kushaq registered its name in the updated list of global NCAP crash tests with a 5-star rating, with 29.64/34 and 42/49 points for adult and child occupant safety, respectively. The Kushaq comes with two engine options – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit, which produces 113bhp and 178Nm, and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit, which offers 148bhp and 250Nm. To ensure the safety of occupants, the car comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a rear-view camera, and more. The top variants also get hill-hold control and electronic stability control. The Kushaq's prices range from ₹11.59 lakh to ₹19.69 lakh (ex-showroom).

2. Tata Punch

While the car has received a price hike of ₹7,000, it is still one of the safest budget-friendly cars. It is currently priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹9.54 lakh (ex-showroom). With a 5-star rating (16.45/17 points) in adult safety and a 4-star rating (40.89/49 points) in child safety by the Global NCAP, the car can be your pick if safety is your top priority. The car is available in four trims – Pure, Adventure, Accomplished, and Creative. The Kaziranga edition is only available in the top-spec Creative trim, while the Camo edition is only available in the Adventure and Accomplished trims. For safety, the Punch gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear defoggers, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and ISOFIX anchors. The micro SUV is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which produces 85bhp and 113Nm of torque and is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed AMT. 

3. Mahindra XUV300

The Mahindra XUV300 has a price range of ₹8.41 lakh –  ₹14.07 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). It has received a 5-star rating (16.42/17 points) for adult occupant safety and a 4-star rating (37.44/49 points) for child occupant safety. Mahindra is offering the car with three engine options – a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which generates 108bhp and 200Nm, a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which produces 115bhp and 300Nm, and a new 1.2-litre TGDI turbo-petrol engine, which offers 128bhp and 230Nm (it can be upped to 250Nm). All models come with a six-speed manual transmission, and in some cases, there is also an option for a six-speed AMT. For safety, the car gets up to seven airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, corner braking control, ABS with EBD, rain-sensing wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. 

4. Tata Altroz

This budget hatchback has received a 5-star rating (16.13/17 points) for adult safety and a 3-star rating (29/49 points) for child safety by Global NCAP. After a recent price hike, the price of the model currently ranges from ₹6.35 lakh to ₹10.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The Altroz gets dual front airbags, ISOFIX child-seat anchors, and rear parking sensors for safety. It comes packed with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which delivers 85bhp and 113Nm, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, with 108bhp and 140Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which generates 89bhp and 200Nm.

5. Tata Nexon

The car has received a 5-star adult safety rating, with 16.06/17 points, and a 3-star rating for child safety, with 25/49 points. It costs between ₹7.70 lakh and ₹14.18 lakh (ex-showroom). The model gets dual front airbags, a rear-view camera,  ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, an electronic stability program (ESP), and ISOFIX child-seat anchors for safety. 

6. Mahindra XUV700

Mahindra’s SUV is offered at prices ranging between ₹13.45 lakh and ₹24.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV is one of the safest cars to buy, as it has received a 5-star rating, with 16.3/17 points for adult occupant safety, and a 4-star rating, with 41.6/49 points for child occupant safety. In terms of safety features, the car gets an electronic stability program (ESP), seven airbags, ISOFIX anchors, and more. Additionally, the higher trims of the vehicle feature advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), comprising autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera.

7. Honda Jazz

The four-wheeler has achieved 13.89 points out of 17 and a 4-star rating for adult safety and 31.54 points out of 49 and a 3-star rating for child safety by Global NCAP. The car's prices range from ₹8.01 lakh to ₹10.32 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). For passenger safety, the car gets dual front airbags, a rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, and ABS with EBD.

8. Tata Tigor EV

The spot according to the rating order belonged to the Toyota Urban Cruiser, but since it's not listed presently on the manufacturer's website, it is possible that it has been discontinued. So, the much-talked-about EV in Tata's line-up gets the spot on the list. The Tata Tigor EV has received a 4-star rating, with 12/17 points, for adult safety. As far as child occupant safety is concerned, the model has managed to get a similar 4-star rating, with 37.24/49 points. 

9. Mahindra Marazzo

The model can be purchased at prices ranging from ₹13.41 lakh to ₹ 15.70 lakh. It has obtained a 4-star rating, with 12.85/17 points, for adult safety. However, for child safety, the car managed to get only a 2-star rating, with 22.22/49 points, by Global NCAP. 

10. Mahindra Thar

The prices of the Thar fall between ₹13.59 lakh and ₹16.29 lakh. The model has received a 4-star rating for adult safety, with 12.52/17 points, and a 4-star for child safety, with 41.11 /49 points.
