‘50 Years under the sign of the Bull,’ that’s the statement that the legendary Italian maker of supercars is spreading across the motoring world with pride. It was a little over 50 years ago that a certain Italian businessman took his Ferrari sports car back to its makers to fix a broken clutch. He soon discovered the clutch used in his Ferrari was the same one used in the tractors that he himself manufactured. When the businessman in question asked for a better replacement for his clutch, he was shunned away by Ferrari. And so he decided to make his own car, which would better than a Ferrari for everyday use. This man’s name was Ferruccio Lamborghini, and because he was a fan of bullfighting, he created his own car company that carried the sign of the raging bull.
Lamborghini was established as Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. in 1963. The intention of Ferruccio Lamborghini was to create the world’s most beautiful and powerful super sports cars. The company was setup in Sant’Agata Bolognese in Italy’s Emilia Romagna region, which was famous at the time for being Italy’s car manufacturing hub.
Because of Ferruccio’s ambition and love for cars, we have seen such amazing beauties grace the roads of the world, such as the 350 GT, Miura, Countach, LM 002 and today’s Gallardo and Aventador. 50 years have now passed since the birth of Lamborghini and the raging bull is now stronger than ever. Staying true to its roots and history, the heart of Lamborghini production remains at its home in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the same place where the factory’s foundation was laid in May 1963. The Italian carmaker has had some rough times in the past and has changed owners many times, but is now performing very well under ownership of Volkswagen subsidiary Audi AG.
To celebrate the past 50 years of the company’s success, Lamborghini will celebrate throughout the year and at destinations across the globe. The month of May 2013 marks the 50th anniversary, and so the celebrations begin on May 7th when 1,200 kilometers of Italy’s roads will be invaded by hundreds of vintage and modern day Lamborghinis from every corner of the globe, as they parade through some of the country’s most beautiful cities. The rally will begin in Milan and, over the course of 5 days, these cars will make their way to the manufacturing plant in Bologna. The company has also launched a special 50th anniversary edition supercar called the Veneno at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and this car clearly shows the evolution of Lamborghini, and what the future holds for this legendary car manufacturer. All we can say is, “Thank you Ferruccio for giving us the raging bull.”
