On the occasion of the country's 75th Independence Day, Ola Electric shared some key details about its first-ever electric car. Set to arrive in 2024, the EV is claimed to have a 0 – 100km/h time of under 4 seconds and a range of 500km.
That Ola Electric is working on launching a bunch of electric cars in the future isn’t news. In the past, the company’s CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, had hinted multiple times on social media that after the launch of their S1/S1 Pro scooter, they’ll build cars next. Now, on the occasion of India’s 75th Independence Day, Ola has finally confirmed its future electric car plans and has made some other announcements.
During the press conference, Mr Aggarwal claimed that cars manufactured in India today are 'dull and boring' and that Indian carmakers are 'conservative' in their approach, and they only make small and mid-size cars. He also didn’t shy away from taking potshots at global automakers for selling ‘hand-me-down’ tech in India. According to Aggarwal, India is a young and energetic country, and this aspect has to be shown in the products that the country produces. Hence, the first car to roll out of the Ola FutureFactory will be India’s sportiest car’, claims the company’s CEO.
While details are sparse at the moment, Ola has shared a number of details about its first electric car. The first Ola electric car will be one of the fastest accelerating cars built in India, with a claimed 0 – 100km/h time of under 4 seconds. It’ll be made using a bespoke EV platform, will feature a glass roof, and will have a low drag coefficient of 0.21. Ola hasn’t revealed any technical specifications as yet, but the company claims the car will have a range of 500km. It’ll also feature the brand’s Move OS tech along with assisted driving capabilities. Last but not least, it’ll be keyless and 'handleless' (we think they mean flush door handles)
At the moment, the company hasn’t revealed the final product. A few teasers, however, were dropped during the press conference, showing the car’s sporty and fastback-like silhouette. The final product is set to arrive in 2024, says Ola.
As for the price, Aggarwal indicated that their first-ever electric car will be more of a niche/premium product and is expected to cost around 30 – 40 lakh. However, the company’s planning to launch 6 electric cars after the launch of the first product. These are expected to be more affordable mass-market EVs.
Ola will produce its electric cars in the same factory where the scooters are produced. However, the facility will be expanded to accommodate car manufacturing. Ola will also set up its own electric cell manufacturing facility – a first for any automaker in India. The indigenously built cells will be used in Ola scooters by the end of 2023. Ola says that by 2027, its manufacturing plant will be capable of producing one million electric cars, 10 million two-wheelers, and 100 GWh cells.
