Nissan India has announced plans to launch a cheaper version of Datsun in a bid to increase its market share in world’s second most populous country.

The Japanese manufacturer revived its low-cost brand Datsun in 2013 to focus on emerging markets in Indonesia, South Africa, Russia and India. However, sales have fell short of expectations, forcing the company to work on an even cheaper vehicle under the same brand.

"It is a smaller car than the Datsun GO and will be more competitive. It will be a cost-effective positioning,’’ Guillame Sicard, Nissan India’s president said.

Nissan recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in India where they announced plans to grow their dealership network to 300 showrooms by 2016.
