A prototype of the next-generation BMW X5 SUV has been spotted undergoing testing in Europe. Despite being fully camouflaged, the model seemed to have a resemblance with the Neue Klasse. Introduced in September 2023 at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, the BMW Neue Klasse Concept, previewing BMW's upcoming design language, is a hark back to the Neue Klasse models of the 1960s. The BMW Neue Klasse Concept was followed by the Vision Neue Klasse X Concept in March 2024, which is said to preview the next-generation BMW iX3 electric SUV.
Coming back to the present, the spy shots of the new BMW X5 show slimmer and sharper headlamps. While the upcoming car will retain the iconic kidney grille, nothing can be said about the design and shape of the grille. Expect the company to offer a smaller kidney grille in tune with the design language of the BMW Neue Klasse X concept. At the back, the tail lamps bleed into the fenders and bumper and give the upcoming X5 a strong appearance. Other expected features are flush door handles, a rear spoiler, and a split tailgate.

Next-gen BMW X5: Platform, Powertrain
The new BMW X5 will be built on BMW's Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that underpins the new 5 Series and the i5. Under the hood, BMW is expected to offer uprated versions of ICE (internal combustion engine) and hybrid powertrains. Judging from the exhaust tips and mufflers, the prototype could be an ICE-powered unit. Electric and hydrogen-powered variants are also likely to arrive. BMW is yet to reveal the launch date of the fifth-generation BMW X5; however, market reports suggest that the model might make its global debut in 2026.
