In what is a case of slightly curious timing, Audi today announced the launch of its entry-level SUV fitted with a petrol engine. Powered by the supercharged 2-litre TFSI mill, the Q3 in petrol guise has a power output of 211bhp and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 6.9 seconds. One can only guess why the launch was announced today, when it is common knowledge that the face lifted version of the BMW X1 – prime competition to the Q3 – is set to be unveiled tomorrow.
Speaking at the launch, Michael Perschke, Head of Audi India, said “India is a market full of young aspirants who want to make a statement about their individuality and keeping that in mind we introduced the Audi Q3 last year. Going by the phenomenal response that the Audi Q3 has raked up since last year it is clear that it is a hot favourite with the young go-getters that want a slice of the Q life. The award winning 2.0 TFSIq engine on the Audi Q3 resonates dynamic and powerful performance which will further spur the demand for our SUV range in India.”
The petrol-engined model is also fitted with Quattro all-wheel drive as standard, which allows the 300Nm of torque to be transferred to the road easily and also helps when tackling slippery road conditions. Combined with the 7-speed S Tronic gearbox, the TFSI engine powers the Q3 on to a top speed of 230km/h, while also enhancing the claimed fuel efficiency to 11.7km/l. At 211bhp, the Q3 is also significantly more powerful than the petrol engine available in the X1 currently, however it remains to be seen what upgrades BMW has planned for the face lifted version tomorrow.
For prospective Q3 buyers though, the petrol version offers an enticing entry point to luxury ownership, with the model being the cheapest of the range at 27.37 lakhs (ex-showroom Maharashtra).
