First customer-bound Volvo V90 rolls off the production line in Sweden.
Four months after its debut, the Volvo V90 estate has finally been put into production. First example of the new 90 Series station-wagon rolled out of the firm’s manufacturing plant in Torslanda, Sweden, recently. The V90 is based around the S90 sedan, and is third car of Volvo’s new 90 Series after the XC90 and S90.
Based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the V90 will have 5 engine options on offer including two petrol, two diesel and one hybrid powertrain. All the engines are 2.0-litre, in-line four, turbocharged units available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Commenting on the development, Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive, Volvo Cars, said, “Taking the new V90 into production is an important milestone for Volvo. We have invested heavily in preparing the Torslanda plant for building SPA vehicles and it is encouraging to see the positive response to the new 90 cars. We are going from strength to strength, as our transformation plan continues to bear fruit.”
Volvo’s three new 90 series cars – XC90, S90 and V90 - are part of a USD 11 billion transformation program launched by the company in 2010. And the investment is definitely reaping benefits for the brand since in 2015 the company has for the first time sold over 500,000 cars globally. Volvo is assured that 2016 will be even better in terms of sales since the new S90 and V90 will be launched around the globe while the XC90 will have its first full year of production. Infact, in the first five months of 2016, the company has already registered a sales growth of 10.4 per cent.
What’s more, Volvo’s plans to transform the brand are quite aggressive – the company claims that within 3 years the entire Volvo line-up will be replaced with new models, and the XC90 will be the ‘oldest’ car in its portfolio. The rejuvenation of Volvo will kick off with the launch a new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) based 40 Series car in 2017. Following that, Volvo will launch the new 60 Series models, which will also be based on SPA.
Considering the low or close to no demand for station wagons in India, it's unlikely that Volvo will launch the V90 in our market. However, what we do know is that the S90 sedan will be here by year end.
