Volkswagen has revealed the three-row Tayron SUV, the stretched version of the new-generation Tiguan. The new Tayron is in its second generation and is positioned between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg. Apart from a seven-seat layout, the new Tayron is available in a five-seat configuration, offering more practicality with a bigger 885-litre boot. Being the seven-seat version of the Tiguan, the new Tayron looks very similar to the latter. It has slender LED headlamps with an illuminated Volkswagen logo up front, while the rear fascia is shaped by a full-width LED light bar and 3D tail-lamp clusters, complete with the Volkswagen badge. The Tayron rolls on a set of 17 to 19-inch alloy wheels that fill the squared-off wheel arches.

The second-generation Tayron measures 4,770mm in length, making it 231mm longer than the Tiguan sold in Europe. To accommodate the extra row of seats, Volkswagen has increased the wheelbase by around 110mm to 2,791mm and extended the rear overhang.

The new Tayron is based on the MQB Evo architecture and gets four engine options under the hood: 1.5-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid, 2.0-litre turbo petrol, 2.0-litre turbo diesel, and two plug-in hybrids (2.0-litre turbo-petrol with an electric motor). All versions come mated to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox but differ in terms of output, which ranges from 148bhp to 268bhp. The vehicle is available in both front-wheel and four-wheel drives.

Volkswagen says the plug-in hybrid version has an electric-only range of over 100 kilometres, thanks to a 19.7kWh battery. The model is also available with a regeneration braking system and an electronic boost function for better performance. The battery can be charged either with an 11kW AC wall box or a 50kW DC charger.
