The upcoming Tata Harrier & Safari facelifts will come equipped with a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for India. This engine was introduced alongside the other all-new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine at the Auto Expo 2023 by the leading manufacturer. These engines, according to the company, comply with the Phase 2 BS6 pollution standards and can run on E20 fuel. They are reportedly manufactured of aluminium and are said to provide superior performance and greater fuel efficiency. Mechanically, the four-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will be capable of producing a power output of 168bhp and 280Nm of maximum torque. Although Tata Motors has not provided any information on the transmission choices of the upcoming SUVs still it is expected that they could include a dual-clutch automatic as an option. The automaker could also provide a manual transmission with this new engine.
Presently, both of these SUVs are fitted with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine from the Fiat. It comes mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission from Hyundai. The new turbo-petrol engine will continue to offer the same power as the existing diesel engine but with a lesser torque output. Both Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs expected competitors, offer a selection of petrol engines. For instance, the Mahindra XUV700 offers a more potent 2-litre turbo-petrol engine compared to the MG Hector and Hector Plus's 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
