Mercedes-AMG has globally unveiled the next-generation E53 with a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. The all-new model features significant performance improvements over its predecessor and is offered in sedan and wagon body types. Unlike the standard E-class, the new Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid has sportier and new AMG-specific design characteristics, like larger front air intakes, side skirt panels, a black front grille with AMG branding, a lip spoiler, and a black rear diffuser, among others. Let's take a closer look at the enhanced version of the Mercedes-AMG E53.
New Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid: Powertrain
As stated, the hybrid drivetrain of the new E53 is its biggest highlight. The vehicle has a powerful 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, which produces 443bhp, and a single electric motor, which produces 161bhp and is integrated with the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. With this setup, the car delivers a total output of 577bhp and 750Nm of torque. The completely variable 4Matic+ system distributes the power to all four axles. With the Race Start mode activated, the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package unleashes an impressive 603bhp of power. Coming to performance, the sedan version of the car can reach 100km/h from a complete halt in 3.8 seconds, while the estate version can do the same in 3.9 seconds. Furthermore, the sedan's electronically limited top speed is 280km/h, while the estate variant's top speed is 275km/h when equipped with the optional AMG Driver's Package.
The vehicle can also run only on electricity, albeit with a limited top speed of 140km/h. It features a 21.22kWh battery, which, according to the WLTP test, offers an emission-free range of 90 – 101 kilometres. In about 20 minutes, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% with the optional 60kW DC fast charger.
The new model features several AMG upgrades, including standard rear-axle steering, a stiff chassis, larger brakes for optimal performance, and a sports suspension system with adjustable damping, all of which enhance the car's handling and driving capabilities. Additionally, the next-gen model comes with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which improves performance even further with its electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, Race Start feature, dynamic engine mounts, and bigger front composite brakes.
New Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid: Design
The E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ features a small lip spoiler, broader front fenders, bigger air intakes on the front bumper, and rear quad tailpipes. The Mercedes vehicle can be customised further with the AMG Exterior Night Package (I and II) and AMG Carbon Exterior Package. The 19-inch light-alloy wheels are standard on the E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, but you can upgrade to 20- or 21-inch forged wheels.
The car's interior exudes luxury and features an AMG performance steering wheel covered in Nappa leather, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in Artico man-made leather, and microcut microfiber upholstery with contrasting red stitching. The illuminated grey open-pore ash wood trim on the door cards and dashboard is one of the hybrid's unique characteristics. The vehicle has a 12.3-inch driver's display and a 14.4-inch infotainment system. The automaker provides an optional MBUX Supercreen, which further enhances the user experience.
