A 2.0-litre turbo-petrol motor, driving the front wheels, and an electric motor, driving the rear ones, together produces a total system output of 671bhp and 1,020Nm.
Mercedes-AMG has given petrolheads around the world quite a conundrum to deal with by revealing the C 63 S E Performance, which replaces the 4.0-litre V8 with a 2.0-litre inline-four (both turbocharged), but one look at the total shove on offer, and you instantly know it's one angry AMG.
The petrol motor on its own is good for 469bhp and 545Nm, making it the most powerful 2.0-litre inline-four engine in production. To reach those impressive numbers, there is a large turbocharger in play, and to minimise power lag, it is spooled by an electric motor. There is a nine-speed automatic taking care of shifting gears, whereas the electric motor on the rear axle has a two-speed gearbox, which drives the rear wheels. All of this means that AMG’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system comes into play with variable torque distribution at all ends, and you also get a Drift mode!
As far as the electric-only range goes, the C 63 S E Performance can manage a meagre 12kms, but its electric motors are happier working alongside the petrol engine, rather than in its absence. The rear-wheel steering is also standard on the new AMG model, and it turns in the opposite, or the same, direction, depending on how fast you are going.
The 0 – 100km/h run can be dispatched in just 3.4 seconds, making the C 63 S E Performance a very quick car. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h but an optional pack can take that up to 280km/h.
While this was the global premiere of the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance, we expect it to come to India early in line with other Merc models. As such, we expect it to arrive on our shores sometime in the first quarter of 2023.
