The Swift hatchback, one of Maruti Suzuki's most popular offerings, is set to enter the Indian market in a new avatar on May 9. The new-generation model made its international debut at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. With a blend of contemporary aesthetics and distinctive Swift style, the next iteration of the hatchback has a recognisable yet fresh appearance. Moreover, even though it still uses the same HEARTECT platform as its predecessor, the new Swift adds several fresh features and safety systems. Globally, the car is in its fourth generation and is available in Japan, the UK, and select European markets. Here's all that you can expect from the upcoming Swift.
New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Styling Updates
Compared to the previous model, the new Swift appears more upright. The current generation's angular headlamps have also been modified, and the bonnet line seems higher than the third-generation version. The model's length is extended along its sides by the broad shoulder line, and the glasshouse also undergoes minor alterations. The door handles have moved back to their previous locations on the rear door, which now has a new rear quarter glass.
The front-wheel-drive version of the new Swift is 3,860mm long, 1,735mm wide, and 1,495mm tall. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive variant stands at 1,520mm tall. Expect the India-spec Swift to have front-wheel drive.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Expected Powertrain
On the mechanical front, the new Z-Series 1.2-litre three-cylinder mill, which already made its debut in international markets, will replace the present K-Series petrol unit. The car's current output is 89bhp and 113Nm; the unit for global markets develops 82bhp of maximum power and 112Nm of peak torque. Furthermore, a manual or automatic transmission option should be available for the engine, along with Maruti's SHVS mild-hybrid technology.
New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Interior and Safety Features
Inside, updates come in the form of a three-spoke steering wheel, an all-LED lighting setup, a floating touchscreen infotainment system, and a redesigned console for AC functions. In terms of safety, the India-spec hatchback should offer three-point seatbelts for rear passengers, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), and six airbags. Although the model at the auto show had disc brakes on the back and ADAS capabilities, it is unlikely that the India-spec Swift will have the same. Notably, the Japan-spec 2024 Swift earned a 4-star safety rating in JNCAP crash tests a few days back. It offered excellent occupant protection in frontal and side crashes, scoring 81% (81.10 points out of 100) in collision safety performance.
New Maruti Suzuki Swift: Expected Price and Rivals
Owing to all the updates mentioned above, the new-gen hatchback is expected to cost between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom figures. When it launches in our market, the 2024 Swift will compete with the Tata Punch and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
In other developments, Maruti Suzuki intends to release the new Dzire in the Indian market later this year. The sedan will use the Swift's base and body components, but it will also include some unique features, such as a roofline resembling a coupe, new back glass, and a flat rear boot.
