Jeep India is set to launch the new, fourth-generation model of the Wrangler on August 9.
The Jeep Wrangler has been an impressive off-roader all along. However, with the current-gen model retailing in India at a price tag of about ₹ 58.7 lakh, the Wrangler has only found select takers. However, despite the lukewarm sales response, Jeep India is set to launch the latest, fourth-generation model of the Wrangler in India on August 9. In the international markets, the new Wrangler is sold in three trim versions – Sport, Sahara & Rubicon – which are available in both two-door and four-door configurations. These can be customised further with multiple specification packs.
However, for India, speculations suggest that Jeep will only bring the fourth-generation Wrangler in its top-spec Rubicon form (four-door configuration). Some reports also suggest that the Rubicon will be rebadged as Jeep Moab for the Indian market due to some homologation requirements. For those not aware, the Wrangler Moab is a separate, special-edition model positioned between the Sahara & Rubicon trims.
In Europe, the Wrangler range is sold with two engine options – a 2.2-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol. Specific markets outside Europe (Africa & the Middle-East) also get the signature 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel produces 197bhp & 450Nm of torque, and it is likely to be the preferred engine choice for the model to be launched in India. Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre inline-four petrol motor puts out 268bhp & 400Nm of torque, and the 3.6-litre V6 motor produces a marginally higher 280bhp but a lower 347Nm of torque. The 2.0-litre petrol motor boasts impressive figures, thanks to a twin-scroll turbocharger. All engines get Electronic Start-Stop (ESS) tech as standard & are mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
In terms of off-road features, the fourth-gen Wrangler offers two 4x4 systems – Command-Track & Rock-Track – front & rear Dana axles, Tru-Lock electric front & rear-axle lockers (Rubicon), Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and an electronic front sway-bar disconnect. The list of style & convenience features includes LED lighting and a new UConnect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, which can further be ordered with a choice of three touchscreen sizes – 5.0, 7.0 or 8.4-inch.
