Panthera will be Jaguar’s new platform which will underpin the British carmaker's high-end electric cars.
The next generation of Jaguar’s electric cars/SUVs will be underpinned by an all-new EV platform. Yes, the new platform will be limited to only Jaguar products as JLR will continue with JLR’s MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) and the EMA platforms for the Rovers.
Initially, the plan was to approach external sources for a pre-made EV platform, however, the company has discarded that idea and will go ahead with developing an in-house platform which will be mainly focused towards the premium segment.
The speculations are that Jaguar is looking to step into the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the upcoming BMW i7 market space. Will Jaguar’s new EV platform spawn a new all-electric XJ? Too soon to confirm; but what can be confirmed is that JLR is looking to make a shift to all-electric portfolio by 2025.
"Concerning a new Jaguar, we have put the priority on the unique proportions of the car. That's the reason why for the moment we are designing it by ourselves," said Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) CEO Thierry Bolloré.
Jaguar’s new platform will be dubbed the Panthera means the genus of the cat family which mainly includes Tigers, Lions, Leopards and Jaguar.
