The new BMW X4 today become the latest niche segment vehicle from the BMW stable. Modelled on the lines of the successful X6, the X4 is based on the X3's platform and running gear, and gives the medium-sized SUV a more stylised look. Referred to as the 'Sport Activity Coupe' in BMW parlance, the new SUV focuses more on the styling, with the SUV body being given a sloping coupe like roof line and an aggressive face. It is however, 14mm longer than the BMW X3, but also 36mm closer to the ground, thereby giving it a more aggressive stance.
Featuring larger air intakes in an aggressively shaped bumper as well as a prominent chrome grille and tear drop shaped headlamps, along with prominent fog lights, both of which also feature LED's as an optional extra. The rear end features the X6-style swooping roof line, while also featuring a high bootlid, which means that the view out of the rear window looks rather compromised, but it is a design that you cannot miss, whether you like it or not. The large tail lights are LED as standard.
The BMW X4 is offered with a variety of engine options, ranging from 184bhp to 313bhp, with the top of the line engines being the 3-liter petrol and diesel turbocharged power plants. However, expect the Indian model to feature the workhorse of the BMW engine range, the 2-liter TwinPower turbo diesel engine, now producing 190bhp and 400Nm of torque in its latest avatar. All of the engines are mated to the ZF-supplied 8-speed automatic gearbox, as well as standard fit Xdrive all-wheel drive system. To increase the feeling of sportiness, the driver and front passenger are seated 20mm lower compared to the X3.
Given the appeal of the bigger X6, expect the BMW X4 to also be launched in the Indian market in a few months time.
