New Audi Q5 SUV

Over a month after revamping its odd-numbered A5, Audi has unveiled the third-generation Q5 based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that supports partially electrified combustion engines. Along with the new platform, the refreshed Audi Q5 brings exterior and interior upgrades, as well as lots of tech.

To begin with, the front fascia of the new Audi Q5 is defined by a new, 'sporty' grille with slimmer yet elongated Matrix LED headlamps, and a sharper bumper. In profile, the vehicle features alloy wheels in sizes from 17 to 21 inches, depending on the spec. The rear fascia is marked out by digital OLED taillamps connected by an LED strip as well as a dual-tone bumper. On the inside, the new Audi Q5 mimics the Q6 e-tron, which is expected to be launched by late 2024 in India. The features list includes a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional 10.9-inch passenger display. Also up for offer is a new, 3-spoke steering wheel and USB-C charging ports.

New Audi Q5: Underpinnings, Powertrain

The third-generation Audi Q5 is based on Audi's new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, which also underpins the new A5. Under the hood, the new Q5 gets three powertrain options: the base 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-petrol (201bhp and 340Nm) with front-wheel or all-wheel drive; the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, diesel Quattro (201bhp and 400Nm, standard); and the top-end 3.0-litre, turbo-petrol, V6 engine (362bhp and 550Nm).

All three engines are paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, belting out an additional 24bhp and 230Nm. The 48V system enables the air conditioning compressor to be driven electrically and does away with the need for a traditional belt drive. Transmission duties are taken care of by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The plug-in hybrid model with a larger battery and external charging option will also be offered but at a later date.

Audi says the new Audi Q5 and the Audi SQ5 will be launched in Germany and other European countries in the first quarter of 2025. In India, Audi launched the existing Q5 in 2021. It is available in two variants – Premium Plus and Technology. The former is priced at Rs 65.51 lakh, while the latter sets you back by Rs 70.80 lakh. The prices are ex-showroom.

We expect the new Audi Q5 to arrive after the introduction of the locally assembled Q6 e-tron in India. The latter is anticipated to cost between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 80 lakh (ex-showroom). Upon launch in India, the new Q5 will rival the Volvo XC60 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
