What is NACTOY?
According to their website, the North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards recognise outstanding achievements in automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, user experience, driver satisfaction, and value determined by a panel of fifty professional automotive journalists. These awards, created by experienced auto writer Christopher Jensen in 1994, are the longest-running awards for best new cars, which are not affiliated with any one magazine, internet, radio, or television station.
NACTOY jurors test and analyse contenders for Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards as they become available throughout the year and vote in three rounds. The procedure starts with a ‘long list’ of all eligible new or significantly altered vehicles of that year. The first round of voting takes place in September when the 50-person jury selects vehicles they believe to be the best in each category. These vehicles then participate in a comparison drive event in October, where the jury evaluates them side by side. Deloitte in Detroit receives and tallies jurors' November and January votes for Finalists (three per category) and Winners, and then announces the Winners in January.
