The upcoming electric SUV will be the second offering from MG Motor in India.
MG Motor has announced that they will be launching a ‘global pure-electric SUV’ in India in 2020. The manufacturer says that the new zero-emission SUV will be the second product for the Indian market. The first product will be a conventional SUV that will go on sale in our market around June 2019.
Although MG Motor hasn’t divulged any details about its new electric SUV, it’s reported that the India-specific electric SUV could be based on the company's Chinese partner SAIC’s Roewe Marvel X that made its global debut recently. On the other hand, a mid-size electric SUV with a power rating of around 115bhp and a range of up to 400km is also a likely possibility.
Commenting on the development, Michael Yang, Executive Director of International Business, SAIC Motor & President of SAIC Motor International Company. “MG will launch a globally-competitive pure-electric SUV in India, to make our contribution to India’s energy and environmental strategies. The pure electric SUV will be a breakthrough chapter in the EV space in India, being one of its kind in the market. This is in addition to the first SUV which we plan to launch in the second quarter of next year."
While the electric SUV is likely to be assembled as CKD, the company will be pushing for heavy localization for its first market launch - a conventional SUV - in India. MG Motor is also going to establish as many as 45 dealerships in the country once it starts operations in 2019. The company will be producing cars at its Halol facility – previously owned by General Motors India – and the annual production will be 80,000 units initially, which can then be expanded to 200,000 units depending on demand.
