MG has revealed the ES5 electric SUV, which is tipped to be a direct replacement for the ZS EV sold across several markets, including India. The small electric SUV will go on sale in China later this year at an expected pricing of about 100,000 and 150,000 yuan (approximately Rs 11.83 lakh and Rs 17.73 lakh). However, its availability in our market is yet to be confirmed. The ES5 is 4,476mm long, 1,849mm wide, and 1,621mm tall, with a 2730mm wheelbase (145mm longer than the ZS EV). It comes with a top speed of 170km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8 seconds. The new ES5 electric SUV will compete globally with models such as the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Kia EV3. Read on for more details.
MG ES5: Powertrain
Like the MG 4 electric hatch, the ES5 is underpinned by MG's Modular Scalable Platform, also referred to as Nebula. This architecture can accommodate cars with wheelbases up to 3,100mm and batteries up to 2 metres long. Moreover, it can support upcoming vehicles with solid-state batteries, electrical architecture, and self-driving capabilities.

The ES5 is propelled by a rear electric motor that produces a maximum power of 166bhp and a peak torque of 250Nm. As with the MG 4, it's unknown if more potent variants will be offered as well. In China, the SUV will have an ultra-slim lithium iron phosphate battery pack (manufactured by the SAIC-CATL joint venture) with three configurations. The biggest battery will come with a capacity of 62.2kWh and a maximum range of 525 kilometres under the CLTC specifications, based on submissions made to the Chinese MIIT.
