Chinese carmaker Baojun, which is a division of SAIC Motor, a state-owned company, has unveiled the Yep Plus, an all-electric SUV. This model builds on the earlier 3-door Yep and is based on the same platform as the MG Comet EV, which is referred to as Wuling Air in China. SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG Motor, is responsible for both models. Rumour has it that the 5-door Yep Plus will make its debut in China sometime in the first quarter of 2024. It was recently seen testing on Chinese roads.
Similar to its 3-door sibling, the Yep Plus is the product of a joint venture between SAIC and General Motors. The subcompact electric SUV, which is priced at 83,800 yuan (about Rs 9.78 lakh) in China, is an important step in the ongoing development of electric vehicles in the automotive industry.
Baojun Yep Plus: Design
Major changes to the Yep Plus's wheelbase and length have allowed it to have rear doors, making it a version of Baojun's 3-door Yep. With a 450 mm larger wheelbase, the Yep Plus measures 2,560mm in total length, or almost 600 mm more than its 3.4-meter sibling. In comparison to the smaller Yep SUV, the width has increased by 75mm and the height by 5mm, reaching 1,760mm and 1,726mm, respectively.

The Yep and Yep Plus are quite identical in appearance, with the exception of the blacked-out C-pillar, upgraded alloy wheels, and the lack of an LCD screen on the back door (which is present on the 3-door version). Like the Jimny, these electric SUVs have a boxy design with slab sides and small, sharp headlights. The headlamps, in particular, have artwork reminiscent of Porsches, which adds to the electric vehicles' overall unique look.
Baojun Yep Plus: Powertrain
Although Baojun is tight-lipped about the specifics of the battery, rumour has it that the Yep Plus will have a larger capacity unit than the 28.1kWh battery in the Yep. The overall range stats lend validity to this assumption; the Yep Plus has an amazing 401km, surpassing the Yep's 303km on the CLTC cycle.
An understated 101bhp electric motor, sitting neatly on the back axle, is the unit that pumps life into the Yep Plus. Baojun has a top speed of 150kph.

MG-badged Baojun Yep for India
MG Comet EV and Baojun's Yep EV SUVs are based on the same GSEV platform and MG Motor India had trademarked Yep's design last year. To compete with the Tata Punch EV, MG Motor is preparing its version for 2025.
