Mercedes-Benz drops the first teaser of new Concept EQ A all-electric hatchback ahead of Frankfurt debut.
At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz announced the inception of an exclusive sub-brand, called the EQ division, for building electric cars. The first product of the new platform will be launched only in 2020, but as much as 10 new electric cars will spawn from the new architecture.
During the auto show, Mercedes also showcased an electric SUV coupe concept, namely, the EQ C. Now with only a couple of days left for the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the firm has released a teaser of another EQ platform vehicle, predictably called the EQ A hatchback. The concept will make its debut in Frankfurt, although production model will only be out sometime around 2020.
Mercedes hasn’t revealed any details of the new concept. That said, its design is going to be inspired by the EQ C SUV concept from last year. In fact, the front fascia – that’s been teased for now – looks remarkably similar to the EQ C. As for the platform, it’ll be underpinned by the same MEA (modular electric architecture) and it’s expected to be a five-seater hatchback.
There are no details about its powertrain as yet. But since it’ll be a hatchback it should come with similar specs as its main rival the BMW i3 or Tesla Model 3. Apart from the EQ A, it’s also reported that Mercedes is working on more luxurious electric car models EQ E and EQ S. The EQ sub-brand will have as much as 10 models in the coming decade, ranging from SUVs, hatchbacks, sedans and coupes.
