Last year we got a look at a more radical looking Mercedes GLA 45 AMG at the LA Auto Show. But just this week Mercedes have unveiled a production ready version of the car, and it is set to be launhced at the Detroit Motor Show next week. Stilll the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG is not a subtle looking car and you might wonder why Mercedes chooses to call it a SUV, since it obviously looks more like a crossover.
But then, this machine features the most powerful 4-cylinder engine known on the planet and has a 2.0 litre capacity with turbocharging that helps bring about a total power output of 360bhp and 450Nm of torque - enough to make you go pale in the face since it can also zip from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 240km/h. The engine is also mated to the simply awesome AMG 7-speed dual clutch transmission and also features the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The car also comes with the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, and AMG braking system as standard features.
From the car's dimensions and performance figures, its closest rival will be the new Porsche baby SUV that is now known to us as the Porsche Macan S.
Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said, "The response to the Concept GLA 45 AMG during the world première at the Los Angeles International Auto Show has reaffirmed our decision to launch this new AMG model. Currently there is no segment growing faster than that of compact SUVs. For Mercedes-AMG it is therefore a logical step to make a dynamic statement in this segment with the GLA45 AMG. Our new high-performance-SUV not only offers the world's most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine, but also impressively low fuel consumption and emissions figures. Not least on account of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the GLA45 AMG is a true AMG when it comes to driving dynamics".
