Mercedes Benz introduced the world to the Concept S-class coupé which it showcased at the Frankfurt motor show and this one gives us a fair idea about the production form of the company’s traditional flagship model.
The replacement for the current CL is some 5005mm long and 1958mm wide, with a 2945mm wheelbase. It's got the german company's new distinctive styling theme on the bodysides, with raised edges which run from the front wings to the rear wheelarch. Even in the pictures you can see an almost glazed roof.
But a long nose of the S Class Coupe dominates the overall proportions and Mercedes calls it a “cowering greenhouse”, the impression that the cabin sits well back behind the front wheels. The look is more or less like the baby CLA, but the S-Class Coupe gets a grille surround extended, and gives it a retro reverse-rake nose.
The Mercedes S-Class Coupe is powered by a twin-turbo V8 that develops 449bhp and 71.3kgm of peak torque. The concept also uses twin ‘stereo cameras’ to produce a 3D view of about 50m in front of the car.
The interiors are conceptual, and Mercedes call it a 'sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury'. Modern luxury makes its way into the car and the doors panels are made from computer-milled aluminium.
The air vents are finished in a mix of white and polished aluminium and the centre console in a new ‘black diamond’ finish created by a chemical vapour deposit process. The process deposits a precious metal on a 'high-sheen chrome surface' at temperatures of 1000 degree C.
