Mercedes-Benz launches GLC to take on the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

Mercedes-Benz India has officially launched its GLC mid-range SUV in India with prices ranging between Rs. 50.70 lakh for the diesel engined GLC 220d and going up to Rs. 50.90 lakh for petrol fueled GLC 300 (ex-showroom Pune). The GLC is based on the current generation C-Class and is the successor to the GLK-Class SUV which never made it to India. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC class brings the advantages of the current C-Class into the company’s SUV range with contemporary design, an upmarket and roomy cabin and a chassis with aluminum components that makes it 80 kg lighter than the model it replaces. Mind you, the chassis has been stretched by 33mm to make the GLC even more accommodating.

This contemporary element is carried on to the car’s styling as well. Mercedes-Benz has styled the GLC to look like other Mercedes models of the time with a twin slat front grille housing the large three-pointed star logo prominently in the centre. The head lamps are a little too sleek for an SUV but again resemble that of other models in the company’s stables. What is impressive though is the wide stance of the vehicle along with its generous ground clearance that gives the GLC a tall profile. And while you are always aware that it is smaller than the GLE, the GLC makes a striking presence despite its meek head lamps and somewhat GLA like front end design.

Mercedes-Benz is offering the GLC with a choice of two engine options in India. First up is a 2.0 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine developing 245hp of max power @ 5,500 rpm and 370Nm of peak torque 1,400 – 2,800 rpm. The diesel engine option is Mercedes’ 2.2 litre turbocharged oil burner churning out 170hp of maximum power between 3,000 – 4,200 rpm and 400Nm of peak torque spread between 1,400 – 2,800 rpm. Both engines come mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels.
