The production-spec Mercedes-Benz G-Class electric, revealed globally in April 2024, is set to launch in India on January 9, 2025. Officially christened as the 'G 580 With EQ Technology', the iconic 100 per cent electric Gelandewagen (translates as an off-roader) has four motors – one on each wheel – and is said to be more capable than its gas sibling when driving off-road. It was previously previewed in a concept form at the inaugural Bharat Mobility Show and is the first electric product from the company to depart from the current EQ naming convention.
Although the Mercedes-Benz G 580 looks nearly identical to the G 450d, it gets a reworked grille, EQ badging, and aerodynamic elements including a revised A-pillar design, raised bonnet, and new spoiler lip. Also new are the alloy wheels. However, the overall silhouette remains the same as the standard G-Class. On the inside, the G-Class electric features twin 12.3-inch displays, passenger-side grab handles, an updated voice assistant (with about 20 distinct commands), and a 360-degree camera. Unlike the regular G-Class, the G580 gets a new switchgear with EV-specific functions.

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Tech: Battery, Motor, Range
As mentioned before, the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon EV has a four-motor, all-wheel-drive setup. The setup makes 579bhp and 1,164Nm of peak torque, resulting in a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds before topping out at 180km/h. The motors draw power from a 116kWh battery packed into a ladder frame. The range figure is rated for 473km on a single charge, and Mercedes-Benz says the battery can be charged at up to 200kW. Using a DC fast charger, the vehicle takes about 32 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent. The battery is also compatible with an 11kW AC charger. The G 580 has the same independent front suspension but a new rigid rear axle with underbody protection made of carbon and other robust materials.
Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Tech: Off-roading Credentials
The G-Class electric has breakover, approach, and departure angles of 20.3 degrees, 32 degrees, and 30.7 degrees, respectively. It has a fording capacity of 850mm. The G Wagon EV also packs in three bespoke functions – G-Turn, G-Steering, and G-Crawl. The G-Turn feature enables the vehicle to rotate on the spot, while the G-Steering allows you to take tighter turns off-road by activating torque vectoring. The G-Crawl function can make the vehicle crawl at speeds as low as 2km/h.
