Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new G 580 at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom). The automaker has also announced the cost of the EQS 450 (5-seater), priced at Rs 1.28 crore (ex-showroom). The new G-Class became available for pre-order in July last year, and deliveries are anticipated to begin shortly. One of its standout features is the ability to perform a 360-degree turn in place, a manoeuver referred to by the brand as a 'tank turn.' The EV preserves the signature boxy shape and dimensions of the classic G-Class, with only slight design updates. The most prominent change is at the front, where a closed panel replaces the usual grille, aligning with the design language of other electric models from the brand.

Customers can opt for an EQ-style grille that features an illuminated edge and blacked-out headlamp surrounds. There is also an updated bumper as well as a roof-mounted spoiler. The side profile remains mostly the same, apart from a newly designed set of alloy wheels. At the rear, the electric G-Class continues to feature a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, though Mercedes-Benz offers the option to swap it out for a square storage compartment designed for the charging cable.

Mercedes-Benz G 580: Battery, Range, and Charging

Coming to the mechanicals, the G 580 is equipped with a quad-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup, where each wheel is powered by a separate electric motor. The total output reaches 579bhp and a substantial 1,164Nm of peak torque. This enables the vehicle to go from 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, with its top speed capped at 180km/h.

It features a 116kWh battery pack located beneath the floor, offering a range of up to 473 km on a full charge. The G 580 supports DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, allowing a 10 per cent to 80 per cent charge in around 32 minutes, and can also handle AC charging at rates up to 11 kW. The model retains its independent front suspension but now comes with an updated rigid rear axle, along with underbody protection made from carbon and other resilient materials for enhanced strength.

Mercedes-Benz G 580: Off-roading Prowess and Features

The G-Class electric boasts impressive off-road capabilities, with breakover, approach, and departure angles of 20.3, 32, and 30.7 degrees, respectively. It also has a fording capacity of up to 850mm. Additionally, the EV includes three specialised features: G-Turn, G-Steering, and G-Crawl. G-Turn enables the vehicle to rotate in place, while G-Steering activates torque vectoring to help navigate tighter turns off-road. The G-Crawl function allows the vehicle to move at an incredibly slow pace, as low as 2km/h, for precise crawling in challenging terrains.

The cabin closely resembles the classic G-Class, featuring dual 12.3-inch digital displays on the dashboard. The G 580 with EQ Technology introduces an upgraded voice assistant, offering around 20 commands tailored specifically to the G-Class. Other features come in the form of new switchgear, passenger-side grab handles, a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.6-inch touchscreens, a 360-degree camera, and a Burmester 3D sound system. For the electric variant, the displays feature exclusive EQ-specific graphics, and the traditional locking differential switches have been replaced by controls for the "tank turn" function and low-range mode.
