Last week we heard about Google self-driving car, and we already know about the numerous innovations in autonomous car technology, but Mercedes-Benz have just showed off their brand new autonomous truck. This new vehicle is being called the Future Truck 2025 concept as of now, and according to the German automaker it is an innovative vehicle that uses the intelligent Highway Pilot system. The company also claims that this concept is a quantum leap in road freight transport in terms of safety, efficiency and connectivity, and will hold many benefits for businesses and society. The Highway Pilot system enables the truck to drive itself at a speed of 85km/h – which isn’t too fast – and has already completed real-world testing on Germany famed autobahn with completely realistic driving situations. Mercedes has also claimed the this new concept will allow the drivers to have more free time to handle other tasks such as paper work to reduce office time. This does sound very interesting indeed, however, while the technology and the vehicle do exist, the concept cannot go mainstream until lawmakers setup a proper framework for driverless vehicles.

Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard: “Autonomous driving will revolutionize road freight transport and create major benefits for everyone involved. With the Future Truck 2025, Daimler Trucks is once again highlighting its pioneering role in innovative technologies and opening up a new era in truck transport. We aim to be the number one manufacturer in this market of the future, which we believe will offer solid revenue and earnings potential.”
