Maserati introduces the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, two sports vehicles that honour the MC12, their ancestral race car. After a 37-year hiatus, the Italian automaker returned to the racing scene in 2004 with the introduction of the MC12. It won multiple races in various cities between 2004 and 2010, including 27 in the FIA GT Championships. Maserati claims that the MC12, with a top speed of over 330km/h, is still their fastest road car ever. The 2020 Maserati MC20 super sports car was also inspired by the MC12, which is the manufacturer's standard in GT championships. Being the first Maserati to be fitted with the V6 Nettuno engine, this latest model heralded a new era for the company that year. The two new iterations have now arrived, each bearing the name of its predecessor and boasting bespoke liveries. Read on to learn more.
Maserati MC20 Icona, Leggenda: Design Elements
It is anticipated that the two MC20 special models, Icona and Leggenda, will be available in a limited run of 20 units each. The exterior graphics and designs of the Maserati MC20 Icona pay tribute to the styling of the Maserati Trofeo Light during its run in the 24 Hours of Daytona by using the same colours as the 2004 MC12 Stradale. The latter is associated with a part of Maserati's iconic past: it was the initial car to draw inspiration from the 1959–1961 Maserati Birdcage Type 61. The design of the current Maserati MC20 Icona sports car is even evocative of the late 1950s in many ways.
The livery of the MC20 Icona sports car is Blue Stradale and Bianco Audace Matte. The Italian flag logo is placed on the door behind the MC20 lettering, while the Maserati Fuoriserie insignia in Bianco Audace is prominently displayed on the side of the livery, in the lower panels close to the back wheels. The hubcaps, which are silver with the Trident logo in contrasting blue, are situated in the centre of the chrome-plated wheels featuring the distinctive Trident design. The engine cover is composed of carbon fibre, the mirrors have an auto-dimming feature, and the brake callipers are likewise painted blue.
Next up is the Maserati MC20 Leggenda race car, which is decked out in the same Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte hues as the Vitaphone Racing team's MC12 GT1. In the 24 Hours of Spa, the latter race car set a record with three wins and two second-place finishes. With its contemporary spin through the MC20 Leggenda, which now embodies trident wheels in Nero Lucido with Nero Opaco and Trident Digital Mint hubcaps, Maserati fans may be better able to enjoy the race vehicle's achievements. The brake callipers are painted black, and the grille, doors, and C-pillar all display the yellow Trident emblem.
Maserati MC20 Icona, Leggenda: Interior
The cabin is equipped with lightweight 4-way monocoque racing seats, and depending on the model, Trident embroidery with the words Icona or Leggenda is present on the headrest. Both cars will come with a carbon fibre interior package, an electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD), a suspension lifter, blind spot and rear cross-path systems, and front and rear mats.
