Maruti Suzuki Fronx EV in the Works; To Rival Tata Nexon EV
Suzuki Motor Corporation, the parent company of Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), has revealed its EV roadmap for the global market, which extensively includes the Indian market. It intends to debut six battery electric vehicles (BEV) in India by 2030. One of them is the all-electric Fronx.
Maruti Suzuki unveiled its latest crossover SUV, the Fronx, at the 2023 Auto Expo. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is a one-of-a-kind offering in the sub-4-metre SUV segment, based on the Baleno hatchback but with SUV-like styling. As a result, it is a crossover. The car is being offered with two petrol engine options. Meanwhile, Suzuki has recently revealed its electrification plans for India and it has since been revealed that the automaker may be developing an all-electric version of the Fronx in addition to the five other electric vehicles slated to arrive in India by 2030. Presently, details on the upcoming all-electric Maruti Suzuki Fronx are limited. Besides that, its overall styling ought to resemble the ICE-powered model. Having said that, we can definitely expect Maruti Suzuki to make minor design changes to the Fronx EV to differentiate it from the ICE-powered model.

In terms of the interior, the difference in instrumentation with EV-specific dials would be the most noticeable change. Other than that, the Fronx EV could get a new paint job and upholstery. However, the feature set should be comparable, with standouts like the 9-inch infotainment system, cruise control, heads-up display, electronic stability control (ESC), a 360-degree camera, a wireless phone charger, and six airbags being retained. A set of extra features for the electric Fronx may include leatherette upholstery and multi-mode regenerative braking. Given its later arrival, it might also receive extra equipment like an instrument cluster designed specifically for electric vehicles and possibly a sunroof.
Now coming to the powertrain, it is too early to discuss specifications of the anticipated Fronx EV. However, it is expected that the all-electric Fronx may share a platform with its ICE sibling. Furthermore, one can anticipate that a respectably potent electric motor and a sizeable battery pack will provide the adequate long-distance capability. Maruti Suzuki could also offer multiple battery pack options. The Fronx EV, like the Nexon EVs, could have a variety of driving ranges varying from 350 kilometres to 400 kilometres. Moreover, the Fronx should have access to fast charging as it is a contemporary EV.

Nevertheless, it would be some time before the Fronx EV becomes a reality since the automaker will first unveil the production-spec eVX in 2025. We anticipate that the Fronx will compete in the same segment as the Mahindra XUV400, the Citroen eC3, and the Tata Nexon EV Prime when it is launched. As a result, prices for the upcoming Fronx e-SUV are likely to range between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh.
