In a race to garner maximum sales, sedans trail behind their counterparts —SUVs and hatchbacks —in India. However, despite low market interest, these vehicles are getting feature upgrades, styling enhancements, and other revisions to maintain their charm among Indian buyers. Last month, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire maintained its lead in the sector as the best-selling sedan in the country. However, the Hyundai Verna's unexpected arrival at number four on the list garnered the most attention. It held the eighth position on the list in December 2023. This time, the popular Hyundai sedan outperformed several vehicles, including the Volkswagen Virtus, Tata Tigor, and Skoda Slavia, to make the cut. Here’s a comprehensive compilation of the top 5 top-selling sedans in January 2024.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire leads with a noteworthy YoY increase of 48% and an amazing sales figure of 16,773 units last month. It comes in four variants — ZXi, ZXi+, VXi, and LXi — with ex-showroom pricing ranging from Rs 6.57 lakh to Rs 9.39 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki car packs a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine with 89bhp and 113Nm, coupled to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT transmission. The same mill, mated to only a 5-speed MT gearbox, produces 76bhp and 98.5Nm while operating on CNG. Although the launch details have not yet been disclosed by the firm, we anticipate that the Dzire Facelift to go on sale in India this year.
Hyundai Aura
With 5,516 units sold, the Hyundai Aura took the second position among the top 5 sedans in January sales. In comparison to the 4,634 units delivered in the same month previous year, there was a 19% year-over-year gain. This subcompact vehicle is available in six monochromatic exterior paint options, with a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh in India. A 1.2-litre engine coupled to an AMT or 5-speed manual transmission powers the Hyundai sedan to generate 82bhp and 114Nm. However, when running on compressed natural gas (CNG), the car delivers 68bhp and 95Nm, exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Honda Amaze
Despite a 47% year-on-year decrease, the Honda Amaze ranked third with 2,972 units sold last month. The sub-4m sedan is priced between Rs 7.16 lakh and Rs 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), with a boot size of 420 litres. It is driven by a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine producing 88bhp and 110Nm, with a CVT or a five-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai Verna
With a noteworthy increase in sales, the all-new Verna finished fourth with 2,172 units delivered in January, compared to 995 vehicles supplied during the same month last year. It was a whopping year-on-year rise of 118%. With this ranking, the revised Hyundai sedan outperformed other vehicles, including the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, and others.
Two engine options are offered for the new Verna: a 1.5-litre NA and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. An IVT unit and a six-speed manual are available transmission options for the NA petrol unit. Meanwhile, the turbo-petrol mill gets a seven-speed DCT or a six-speed manual transmission. The starting price of the new Verna in India is Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom).
Volkswagen Virtus
Volkswagen's Virtus midsize car grabbed fifth spot on the list. Compared to 1,379 units sold in the same period the previous year, the manufacturer sold 1,879 Virtus cars last month. The Virtus is available in our market with two petrol engine options: a 1.5-litre motor with 148bhp and a 1-litre mill with 113.4bhp. The price of the Volkswagen sedan starts at Rs 11.48 lakh in India.
