The new Maruti Suzuki Baleno will take on the popular Honda Jazz and Hyundai Elite i20 in the premium hatchback segment. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of the Baleno to see how it intends to compete against its well established rivals

Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno badge was a much loved one in regard to the sedan model that was on sale in India during the early 2000s. And as we know now, the company is now all set to launch its new premium hatchback in India with the iconic Baleno badge. But will the new Baleno be able to live up to its name? We think it definitely has the potential to do so.

Let’s take a look at some of the top aspects of the new Baleno to understand what the new model is all about.

  1. Looks the Part: The new Baleno is an eye grabber with its swooping lines, bold curves and large glass house, it looks nothing quite like any other Maruti on the market today. The design is contemporary, fresh and pleasing to the eye. The Baleno definitely stands out of the crowd as something new and fresh as it looks like nothing else.
  1. Comes Loaded with Standard Safety Features: Maruti Suzuki is offering the Baleno with anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and dual front airbags as standard. This is a very welcome move considering how the safety equipment generally in cars in India are limited to top-end variants. Unlike earlier, this Maruti also gets rear defogger and wash wipe from the second-from-base Delta variant onwards.
  1. Fuel Efficient: The new Baleno is powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine that returns a claimed 21.4 km/l in the manual as well as automatic model. The diesel fueled Baleno returns a claimed 27.39 km/l. Making it the most fuel efficient premium hatchback in the country. The car’s new platform from Suzuki also has part to play in its efficiency as it is quite a light structure, about 100 kg lighter than that of the Swift.
  1. Roomy Cabin: Suzuki has engineered the Baleno to have an extremely roomy cabin, thanks also to the car’s 2,520mm wheelbase. There is plenty of front and rear cabin space. The boot is also quite spacious with 339 litres of space.
  1. Comfortable Ride: We had a chance to go for a spin in the new Baleno ahead of its launch and have come back very pleased with the ride comfort of the car. It dismissed broken tarmac, pot holes and wavy roads with aplomb, making for quite a comfortable ride in its segment.
