Codenamed 'Maruti YTB', the crossover is likely to mark the return of Baleno RS' 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol motor in the BS6 era.
Maruti Suzuki seems to be going all guns blazing to cash in on the ongoing SUV boom. After launching the Brezza facelift, the brand is gearing up for the launch of the Grand Vitara soon, and amidst all this, we've spied a new crossover, which seems to be based on the Baleno. If reports are to be believed, Maruti is readying an alleged 'Baleno Cross' model, which might debut at the Auto Expo next year.
Built on the same Heartect platform and likely to be positioned a step above the Baleno hatchback, Baleno Cross is expected to have increased ground clearance, a fresh face (inspired by the Grand Vitara), and a fair amount of plastic cladding all around to strengthen its crossover credentials.
Some reports also suggest that Baleno Cross might also mark the return of Maruti's 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol motor in the BS6 era. The engine was discontinued along with the Baleno RS towards the end of the BS4 era. However, to enhance fuel efficiency and meet the stricter emission norms, it is expected to get some form of electric assistance this time. So, the addition of the brand's mild-hybrid tech cannot be ruled out.
Will the Baleno Cross be a spiritual successor to the current S-Cross? Will it be any bigger than its hatchback counterpart? What other powertrain options will Maruti Suzuki offer with the Baleno Cross? Hopefully, we'll get to know the answers to all these questions soon.
